What is: Smith Mine, 39 corrugated metal structures spread across the side of the hill in Carbon County, Montana, near Bearcreek, Montana.

What was: mining 8000 tons of coal in 1907. Electrification and automation + 3 shifts a day/6 days a week led to increased production of 500,000 tons annually for a nation at war in the 1940s. Then, 1943 an explosion that killed all 74 miners and the business and work was gone.
